Hot Shots: Hot Cereal, 05/27/04, Rocky View
This photo, taken by a bystander just as crews arrived on the scene, shows 50 Tank's crew attacking a fully involved semi. The tanker was initially responding as support, when the fire was believed to be much closer to the city. However, it was just moments from our station, and the Tank crew was first on scene - and alone!
In another photo taken by a bystander, Firefighters Jennifer Evans and Brett Leeman work hard to knock down the semi-truck. Fueled by the contents of the tractor - including its two just-filled diesel tanks, the fire was exceptionally intense.
Firefighting foam was used, as well as the 'Blitzfire' heavy attack nozzle (being manned by the two firefighters at right, at the end of the yellow hoseline).
The initial fire was soon knocked down, but the cargo had already ignitied, and was smoldering. The trailer had collapsed, breaking in half, and spilled its contents onto the road.
The truck was carrying a full load of dry goods - groceries bound for locations west of the city. Here, smoldering boxes of cereal are pulled off the trailer.
A number of crews spent several hours picking apart the cargo, trying to reach the fire still burning inside the trailer.
These holes were made with what is known as a 'piercing nozzle' - a large, hardened metal spike, hollow, with holes to spray water from at one end, and a hose connection on the other. It was driven into the side of the truck to force water into the tightly packed cargo.
Ultimately, the company assigned to recover the destroyed truck had to use scoop loaders to unload the trailer.
