In the backcountry of Kananaskis, one cannot always access the patient by road. The solution is what is known as a "sling evac".
Here, Alpine Helicopters (contracted to perform these rescues by Alberta Sustainable Resources) lowers the rescuer and the stretcher containing the patient to ground on a long line, virtually at the feet of the waiting Cochrane Fire EMS paramedics.
After Alpine's part of the rescue is complete, the medics call in STARS (the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society) due to the extreme distance to the hospital.
