Hot Shots: Training - Pumping Skills, 08/17/04, Bragg Creek
Deputy Chief Low shows how to measure the flow of a given hose stream. The device in his hands measures the water pressure when placed in the stream's path. This wouldn't be used on the fireground - instead, this is used when practicing, or testing a configuration, to make sure the appropriate flow rate/pressure is being achieved.
Fire crews take turns manipulating what we call a 'master stream' or 'monitor' line. This is an appliance that self-anchors in the ground and can flow a tremendous amount of water - much more than a firefighter could handle in a hand-held hoseline. (Sometimes these appliances are seen on the top of fire trucks or on fireboats, etc., and are called 'deck guns'.)
