Hot Shots: Training - Vehicle Fires, 09/23/03, Redwood Meadows
Crews attack a vehicle fire during a training exercise. We are always taught to fight vehicle fires from an angle relative to the vehicle, to minimize the risk of being injured by anything that might be propelled from the vehicle in the rare chance of an explosion.
Notice the firefighters are all wearing full protective gear, including breathing air packs, and there is a 'backup' line set out to protect the firefighters and provide an alternate attack line if the main one malfunctions.
In order to extinguish the fire in the engine compartment, the hood must be pried up with a tool. (It can't be opened from inside the car any longer, because the fire melted the release cable.)
