General Information

Our 2016 recruitment campaign is now underway. Its central theme will focus around the phrase "EVERY MINUTE MATTERS - LOCAL VOLUNTEERS LOWER RESPONSE TIMES" and the concept of a maze.

Located on the maze is a pictograph representing some type of emergency (fire, medical, rescue). There are 2 starting boxes to the maze; 1 Local Volunteers, 1 Calgary Volunteers. It quickly becomes apparent that solving the maze from the local box is much faster than from the Calgary box.

The maze is the visual attraction and representation of the campaign message that in an emergency, every minute matters and that the fastest response to an emergency comes through local volunteers.

Currently 2/3 of the department’s membership is from Calgary (and area). Many people in the community are currently unaware of this stat, and therefore may feel less of a need to volunteer themselves.

Recruitment Process

Our new recruitment process is set up to be faster and easier. Here is our timeline for the process over the next few months:

Step 1: 2016 Recruiting Step 1

During this time our Recruitment Team will be out at various community events to explain more about what we do at RMES. Watch for upcoming events and come see us where you can fill out our FastApp so we can contact you once the application intake closes. You can also fill out the FastApp on the website. If you change your mind, simply let us know when we contact you in September.

Step 2:

2016 Recruiting Step 2

Upon completion of the application intake, the Recruitment Team will take time to review all of the applications and contact individuals we would like to invite to the next step.

Step 3:

2016 Recruiting Step 3

The Meet & Greet sessions allow us to get to know you better. It also offers us the opportunity to go through what the rest of the process looks like, what our expectations are and how things will progress once you commence your training. It also gives you an opportunity to ask questions.

Applicants will be asked to bring a resume to this session (no certificates will be collected at this time).

These sessions will be offered September 19, 21 and 26 from 19:00-20:00. Individuals will then be contacted regarding an interview.

Step 4:

2016 Recruiting Step 4

Interviews are typically 45-60min. We don't require questions to be answered in a specific format (STAR etc.)

Step 5:

2016 Recruiting Step 5

Any applicant who moves on from the interview stage will be brought in for a physical assessment.

Step 6:

2016 Recruiting Step 6

After a final review, successful applicants will be contacted with an offer for a position with RMES. At this stage, some final documents will be requested including a drivers abstract, criminal records check & medical evaluation from a physician. We ask that you do not get these documents until requested to ensure they are current and no unnecessary costs are accrued by you.

Step 7:

2016 Recruiting Step 7

The new recruit class is scheduled to begin in January of 2017.
